Middlesex Secures Knockout Spot with 87-Run Victory over Derbyshire
An explosive century from Ben Geddes propelled Middlesex to an 87-run win over Derbyshire Falcons at the OurCoop County Ground, securing their place in the knockout stages of the Metro Bank One-Day Cup. Geddes, the Middlesex skipper, dominated the innings with a remarkable 109 runs off 93 balls, including seven sixes, and forged a pivotal third-wicket partnership of 156 runs with Max Holden, who contributed 65 runs.
Middlesex posted a formidable total of 327 for 6, bolstered by Joe Cracknell’s unbeaten 44 off 31 deliveries. This score proved too high for a weakened Derbyshire side, which was missing key players due to injury. Fast bowler Ben Aitchison and batter Wayne Madsen were absent, forcing the team to field England spinner Shoaib Bashir.
Knowing a victory was essential for progression, Middlesex lost Josh de Caires early, caught behind for 8 runs in the ninth over. Nathan Fernandes was dismissed for a duck trying to drive Anuj Dal. However, with Geddes and Holden finding their rhythm, Middlesex regained control of the match.
Geddes reached his half-century by hitting Luis Reece for six, before accelerating his innings with a barrage of boundaries. He completed his century in just 87 balls, with his second fifty coming off a rapid 33 deliveries. After a near miss on a running catch, Geddes eventually fell to Jack Morley, driving a catch to long off. Holden followed soon after, attempting a ramp shot off Nick Potts.
A late flourish from Cracknell and a quick nine-run cameo by Gohar ensured the hosts set a challenging target for the Falcons. Derbyshire’s chase commenced poorly when Harry Came fell lbw to Roland Jones in the third over. However, Martin Andersson and Billy Jewell steadied the innings with a partnership of 74 runs from 85 balls.
The breakthrough came when Gohar dismissed Andersson in his first over, leading to a sharp decline in Derbyshire’s batting. Henry Brookes claimed two wickets in quick succession, dismissing Brooke Guest and then catching Jewell off a drive. The Falcons crumbled further when Yousaf Bin Naeem edged Gohar to slip, shifting the momentum firmly back to the Middlesex bowlers.
Despite a brief recovery from Ross Whiteley and Luis Reece, who added 59 runs from 66 balls, the required run rate soared. The innings ended when Whiteley was caught at deep square leg off Noah Cornwell, followed by Reece missing a big swing in the next over. This defeat ended Derbyshire’s hopes in the tournament after their loss to Yorkshire just prior.
