Research Links Marine Heatwaves to Human Health Risks
New research indicates that marine heatwaves pose significant threats to human physical and mental health, with researchers from Adelaide University and the University of Hong Kong advocating for their recognition as a public health concern. Despite evidence illustrating the widespread impact of these events on communities, the human health effects remain underexplored.
Marine heatwaves have been associated with severe weather events, including the rapid intensification of Hurricane Otis in 2023, which caused over $15 billion in damage in Mexico, and Typhoon Doksuri, affecting more than two million people across Asia. In South Australia, a harmful algal bloom linked to marine heat conditions has resulted in various health problems in coastal communities.
Impact on Human Health
A paper published in Nature Sustainability outlines how prolonged periods of abnormally warm ocean temperatures can lead to intensified storms, decreased seafood availability, threats to food safety, and increased mental health pressures. Dr. Laura Falkenberg, lead author and researcher at Adelaide University’s School of Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences, stated, “Marine heatwaves are no longer just recognized as an environmental issue; they are increasingly also perceived as a human health issue.”
Dr. Falkenberg emphasized that these events influence health in diverse ways, stating they can lead to severe storms, affect seafood safety, disrupt livelihoods, and contribute to anxiety and grief in communities dependent on healthy oceans.
As climate change continues to intensify, marine heatwaves are becoming more frequent and prolonged, resulting in widespread ecological damage. Scientists have documented coral bleaching, mass marine organism deaths, harmful algal blooms, and disruptions to fisheries and aquaculture, which in turn affect human populations reliant on these resources.
Food Security and Psychological Effects
Extremely warm ocean temperatures heighten the risk of injuries, deaths, and displacement from flooding and storms. Additionally, marine heatwaves increase the likelihood of harmful algal blooms that contaminate seafood and pose health threats to consumers. Long-term effects include declining fish populations and reduced seafood production, jeopardizing food security for billions globally who rely on marine resources for nutrition.
The psychological toll of marine ecosystem degradation is significant, particularly for those whose cultural identities and livelihoods depend on the ocean. A toxic algal bloom in South Australia in 2025 was tied to elevated levels of ‘eco-anxiety’ and physical health issues, including respiratory problems.
Call for Proactive Public Health Strategies
Researchers urge public health agencies to prepare for marine heatwaves similar to terrestrial heatwave plans. This could involve incorporating marine heatwave forecasts into public health strategies, considering human health impacts in coastal management, and fostering collaboration among ocean scientists, health agencies, and resource managers.
“Recognizing these health impacts is the first step towards better protecting communities,” Dr. Falkenberg asserted, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to mitigate the adverse effects of marine heatwaves on human health and marine ecosystems.
