Bangladesh Claims Historic Victory Over Australia in First Test

In a stunning upset, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto hailed his team’s nine-wicket victory over Australia in the first Test in Darwin as their “biggest win so far in any format.” This triumph, which gives Bangladesh a 1-0 lead in the two-match series, marks a significant achievement for the ninth-ranked Test team as they defeated the world No. 1 side on home soil.

Throughout the match, Bangladesh demonstrated dominance in all departments. The team, playing only its third Test in Australia, restricted the hosts to 198 runs in the first innings, with fast bowlers claiming all ten wickets. Mehidy Hasan Miraz further contributed by taking five wickets in Australia’s second innings, which ended at 284, setting Bangladesh a target of just 57 runs.

“This is the biggest win so far for Bangladesh in any format,” Shanto stated during the post-match presentation. “Going forward, we will do something special in the future.” The captain expressed pride in both his performance and that of his teammates, emphasizing the extensive hard work that led to their success.

Opener Tanzid Hasan also played a pivotal role, scoring an impressive 101 in the first innings, which helped set a formidable total of 426 and a lead of 228 runs. This was only Tanzid’s second Test match, as he made his debut earlier this year against Pakistan. Shanto praised Tanzid for his calm approach and adaptability, noting that his ability to play attacking cricket was evident while maintaining composure during the match.

Fast bowler Hasan Mahmud was recognized as the Player of the Match with nine wickets, including a standout six-for in the first innings. Reflecting on the team’s preparations, Mahmud stated, “Before the match in every practice session we’ve been doing our best every day… We were focusing on the fact that whatever happens just believe in your process and don’t think about the outcome.”

When asked about the potential to secure a 2-0 series victory in Mackay, Shanto acknowledged the need for continued focus and consistent performance. He reiterated, “We have to play five days of good cricket.” He emphasized the importance of following the same successful processes and playing session by session to achieve their goals.
