Apple’s AirPods with Cameras Raise Privacy Concerns Amid New Functionality
Apple is reportedly working on AirPods equipped with cameras, prompting privacy concerns similar to those faced by other AI wearables such as Meta’s Ray-Bans. This move appears at odds with Apple’s branding as a privacy-focused tech company.
The alleged presence of cameras was confirmed through leaked video footage from Apple’s macOS 26.7 release candidate. The video features a man holding a book while conversing with Siri, accompanied by audio that states, “With Visual Intelligence, your world becomes savable. See something you like? Just ask me to save it for later.”
Additionally, code referencing a “Hair Detected” error suggests that the AirPods will provide warnings if hair obstructs their cameras, indicating further functionality. The introduction of such devices poses a significant risk for Apple if not managed appropriately, as consumer perceptions could lead to distrust.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the AirPods with cameras are not intended for recording media. Instead, Gurman states that “the cameras essentially act as eyes for the Siri digital assistant and aren’t designed to take photos or video.” This feature will enable users to ask Siri for assistance related to their immediate environment, such as identifying a book or providing cooking suggestions.
The new functionality aligns with Apple’s strategic goal of reducing reliance on iPhones throughout the day by integrating AI into a widely accepted wearable device. Users would potentially engage more naturally with their surroundings rather than constantly looking at their phones.
However, the forthcoming AirPods will include an LED indicator that activates whenever visual data is being sent to the cloud. Gurman raised concerns about the visibility of this light on the small device, as its presence may contribute to public skepticism surrounding privacy. Although Apple intends to encourage transparency, the LED risk being associated with other controversial AI wearables, thereby complicating Apple’s efforts to distinguish its products.
