Barcelona Signs Rodri from Manchester City for €60 Million

FC Barcelona has officially announced the signing of Manchester City midfielder Rodri for an initial fee of €60 million (£51 million / $69 million). The transfer deal, confirmed by both clubs, includes potential add-ons that could see City earn an additional €16.5 million (£14 million / $19 million) based on Rodri’s performances at Barcelona over the coming years.

The 30-year-old Spain captain has signed a four-year contract with the Catalan club, reportedly rejecting an offer from Real Madrid to finalize his move to Spotify Camp Nou. Rodri’s arrival strengthens a midfield already featuring talents such as Pedri, Gavi, Frenkie de Jong, Marc Bernal, Dani Olmo, and Fermín López.

Barcelona was not initially in urgent need of a midfielder this summer but acted swiftly to secure Rodri once it became evident he was available, given that he had only one year remaining on his contract at Manchester City. The move comes at a crucial time, as midfielder Frenkie de Jong faces a stint on the sidelines due to injury. Coach Hansi Flick views Rodri as a “statement signing,” emphasizing the importance of leadership in the squad.

“We need players with this leadership on the pitch,” Flick said back in April, despite Barcelona’s success in winning consecutive La Liga titles. “This is important in these [key] moments… It’s about speaking or telling a teammate ‘One or two metres left or right, or press.’ This is what we need on the pitch, more to speak.” Rodri’s experience and ability to guide teammates will be vital in crucial matches, especially in the latter stages of competitions like the Champions League.

Rodri began his career at Villarreal and Atlético Madrid before making the move to Manchester City in 2019. During his time in England, he secured multiple honors, including four Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy. On the international stage, he was instrumental in Spain’s European Championship and World Cup victories, achieving Player of the Tournament accolades at both events. His triumphs at the Euros also led to him winning the Ballon d’Or in 2024, marking the first time a Spanish player has claimed the award since Luis Suárez in 1960.
