A major earthquake struck the Greek island of Crete on Saturday, registering a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale. The tremor occurred at approximately 10:09 a.m. local time, with its epicenter reported near the town of Zakros, situated in the northeastern part of the island.

Authorities confirmed no immediate reports of serious injuries; however, minor structural damage was noted in some coastal areas. Local residents reported strong shaking that prompted evacuations, particularly in high-rise buildings and coastal resorts.

The tremor was felt widely, including in nearby regions of the Aegean Sea. Geologists have indicated that seismic activity in the region is common due to its position near the boundary of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Emergency services were deployed to assess the situation and ensure the safety of residents and tourists. The Greek government has stated that it will monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary.
