Hints of Injustice 3 in Playtest Reveal

While NetherRealm has not officially announced its next project, speculation is rife that it might be the third installment in the Injustice superhero fighting game series. Recent developments indicate that a limited number of external testers are currently engaging with Injustice 3.
The lead on this speculation comes from a now-deleted post by Good Gamer Group, a company known for providing NDA-protected testing services for game developers. The post was highlighted by EventHubs (via Kotaku), which outlined various clues linking the project to NetherRealm.
The listing for the mystery game contained descriptors such as “triple-A fighting game” and “major 2D fighting game.” Although these terms aren’t exclusive to NetherRealm, it is noteworthy that the other fighting games currently in development are either smaller titles or focus on 3D mechanics, as pointed out by EventHubs.
The playtest’s location also adds context, taking place in Culver City, California, where both NetherRealm and its parent company, Warner Bros. Games, are headquartered. This geographical detail further supports theories about the game’s origin.
NetherRealm’s leadership has acknowledged ongoing projects; studio head Ed Boon mentioned in May that the team is “actively pursuing another Mortal Kombat game” and “definitely doing more.” Additionally, the studio’s hiring of QA testers and designers this year lends credence to the likelihood of new game development.
Further fueling speculation, two voice actors from the initial Injustice games mentioned in 2025 that they would return for Injustice 3, although they later retracted their comments—a common occurrence when actors inadvertently disclose details about unconfirmed projects. Moreover, artwork associated with Injustice 3 was discovered on a Warner Bros. Games artist’s resume back in April.
The timing of the playtest suggests it aligns with NetherRealm’s recently established four-year development cycle, as seen following the release of Mortal Kombat 1 in 2023, which came out four years after Mortal Kombat 11.
If indeed Injustice 3 is slated for a 2027 release, a reveal at The Game Awards in December would fit within the studio’s typical timelines. Mortal Kombat 11 was announced during The Game Awards, although Mortal Kombat 1 did not follow the same path. As events unfold, it appears that a formal announcement regarding this project could be imminent.
