Elden Ring Releases Tarnished Edition on Switch 2, Issues Emergency Patch for Item Duplication Glitch

Elden Ring has garnered renewed attention with the launch of its Tarnished Edition on the Switch 2. To accompany this highly anticipated port, FromSoftware released a DLC pack that includes additional content available on other platforms.
Shortly after the DLC became available, players discovered a method to duplicate the items it contained, enabling users who do not own the add-on to acquire these items. In response to the issue, FromSoftware implemented an emergency patch specifically aimed at addressing the security loophole.
The update, labeled Patch 1.17.1, was deployed on all platforms on September 8, 2023. The announcement on X stated, “This update fixes an issue in multiplayer where, under specific conditions, DLC-specific items could be obtained when not normally eligible. No additional content is included.”
The Tarnished Pack is priced at $5 / £4 and introduces two new starting classes—the Idus Knight and Heavy Knight—along with new armor sets, weapons, and new skins for the horse mount, Torrent.
The duplication glitch facilitated item transfer by having a player who owned the DLC join the game of someone who did not, allowing the items to be dropped for others to pick up while remaining in the original player’s inventory, thereby creating multiple copies.
While Patch 1.17.1 addressed this exploitation, it did not eliminate item trading entirely. Players can still trade items, including DLC-exclusive weapons and armors, but such transactions will now correctly remove these items from the original owner’s inventory.
Kelsey Raynor from Eurogamer expressed satisfaction with how FromSoftware successfully adapted Elden Ring for the Switch 2, though acknowledged that the game’s performance is not without its flaws.
