Activision Announces In-Match Countdown for Double XP Tokens in Modern Warfare 4
- Double XP tokens in Modern Warfare 4 will now only count down during live matches.
- Existing tokens from previous Call of Duty titles and Warzone will be usable in the new game.
- Modern Warfare 4 is set to release on October 23, 2023, on multiple platforms.
Activision has announced a significant change regarding the use of double XP tokens in the upcoming game, Modern Warfare 4. At launch, and moving forward, these tokens will only count down while players are actively engaged in matches, rather than in real-world time.
The update was confirmed via Call of Duty’s official X account, which stated that players will also be able to utilize existing double XP tokens accrued from prior Call of Duty titles or Warzone.
Previously, once activated, double XP tokens began their countdown immediately. This led to frustrations, as players could lose valuable time if they stepped away, took too long to customize their loadouts, or waited for others to join. The universal dissatisfaction with this system prompted ongoing requests from players for Activision to revise its implementation.
This issue is not unique to Call of Duty; the Battlefield franchise employs a similar method for managing double XP tokens, prompting similar complaints from its community. Recently, Battlefield Studios exacerbated this frustration by erroneously communicating changes to their token system, only to retract the statements multiple times.
As the release of Modern Warfare 4 approaches, Activision appears to be employing strategies to draw back returning players. Since the game’s reveal, there have been multiple initiatives, including a pre-order loyalty discount, a skin toggle in Warzone, updates regarding matchmaking algorithms, and now this double XP token modification—efforts aimed primarily at enticing long-time gamers who may have become disengaged with the series.
Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for release on October 23, 2023, across PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch 2.
