Rockstar Games has announced significant improvements to the weather system in their upcoming title, Grand Theft Auto 6. The development team has implemented new features such as hurricanes, rainbows, and “vertiginous cumulonimbus clouds,” aiming to create a more immersive open-world experience.
Owen Shepherd, Rockstar’s Vice President of Art for Lighting and Rendering, shared insights with Game Informer about these enhancements. He stated, “We have re-engineered our weather system to make everything much more localized and persistent, and really wanted the world to feel dynamically solid and achieve a sense of scale we haven’t felt before.” He elaborated on the new technology that features dynamic cloudscapes, which can create diverse weather patterns, from clear Miami skies in winter to thunderous clouds typical of Florida’s summer and autumn.
The new weather system offers localized effects. Players may witness rainfall occurring in one area while remaining dry in another, with residual effects like rainbows and wet pavements continuing even after the rain has stopped. Shepherd described the visual impact of storms, mentioning, “Heavy clouds, strong winds, dense atmospherics, and a lot of rain combine so that everything is dripping wet.” He noted that players can expect dramatic thunderstorms with rumbling thunder and flashes of lightning.
There is currently limited information on how these weather changes may affect gameplay mechanics, such as vehicle handling during wet conditions or the impact of flying into a hurricane. GTA 6 is scheduled for release on November 19, 2023, for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, providing players with an opportunity to explore these new features firsthand.
In addition to weather improvements, Rockstar confirmed that the game will include over 170 animal species, featuring 60 different birds and more than 30 land mammals. The return of underwater scuba-diving will allow players to encounter various marine life, including manatees, jellyfish, and whales, along with discoverable and Legendary animals similar to those in Red Dead Redemption 2.
