Is the New Lighting in The Witcher 3 Remastered Edition a Game-Changer or Total Disappointment?

New Lighting Changes in Witcher 3: Remastered Spark Controversy Among Players

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • Players express frustration over the new lighting in the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered, finding it too bright.
  • Users are requesting a way to revert to the older version of the game, particularly on consoles.
  • Despite mixed reactions, some players find the remastered edition visually appealing.

The recent free upgrade to Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered has incited a mixed response among players, primarily due to the extensive changes made to the game’s lighting. Many players believe these adjustments have rendered the visuals too bright and washed out, prompting dissatisfaction across various platforms.

This lighting controversy has prompted some players to appeal to developer CD Projekt Red for an option to revert to the previous version of the game, particularly on consoles where such reversion is not a straightforward task. One user expressed their discontent on X, stating, “You people should figure out a way for Xbox users to play the older version because my god this new lighting is lifeless,” further lamenting the loss of the game’s fantasy whimsy.

While many agree that improvements have been made in terms of models, texture quality, and foliage density, another commenter noted that the game’s new lighting system, despite being technologically advanced for its use of path tracing, is excessively bright and lacks the contrast found in the original versions. The subjective nature of players’ preferences regarding these changes is evident.

Players have noted that the overall brightness and lower contrast in the Remastered edition become particularly evident in comparison screenshots. A problematic Bloom setting has been identified on PC, which players can disable, but console users have no similar option, contributing to ongoing frustration.

The introduction of the new Path Tracing option, designed for high-end computers, has also been criticized for its tendency to illuminate environments excessively. This feature has not garnered wide support, with even high-performance PC users expressing dissatisfaction due to its negligible impact. Furthermore, updated HDR settings may result in excessively bright visuals on compatible displays.

Additionally, technical issues have emerged for different user groups. PC players using AMD systems are encountering various graphical glitches, while Switch 2 owners report blurry visuals in handheld mode, despite disabling related graphical settings. Audio mix issues are also being reported, with some players experiencing discrepancies in volume between voices and music, albeit a workaround has been noted: meditating in-game seems to temporarily resolve this.

Console players, particularly those using older Xbox Series S hardware, have reported performance drops post-update, as minimum specifications have been raised, impacting frame rates adversely. Automatic updates further limit options for users wishing to access the previous version.

While many concerns arise regarding potential bugs—which are likely to be addressed—questions linger about the intentionality of the predominately bright lighting and whether CD Projekt Red plans to make adjustments. Reactions to the upgraded look of the game have been bifurcated, with many players affirming that “the game looks so much better now,” reflecting a significant divide in opinions.

In my experience with The Witcher 3: Remastered on PC, the improvements have revitalized the game without fundamentally altering its essence. However, I have yet to experience the game on console, leaving an understanding of performance and visual fidelity across platforms somewhat incomplete.
