U.S. Private Job Creation Surges in September, ADP Reports

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • U.S. private job creation rose by 90,000 in September, surpassing expectations.
  • Service providers led growth with 59,000 new jobs, while goods producers added 31,000.
  • Base pay increased by 3.2%, and gross pay accelerated by 4.7% compared to last year.

Private job creation in the United States experienced a robust uptick in September after a brief slowdown, signaling further stabilization in the labor market, as detailed in an ADP report released on Wednesday.

The payroll processing firm reported that employment within companies increased by 90,000 jobs in September, a notable rise from the revised figure of 36,000 jobs in August and above the Dow Jones consensus estimate of 68,000.

The report indicated a balanced contribution from various sectors, with service providers adding 59,000 positions and goods producers contributing 31,000. Notably, education and health services were the largest contributors, generating 55,000 new hires.

Additional areas of growth included leisure and hospitality with 22,000 jobs added, manufacturing at 17,000, and construction with 15,000 positions. However, some sectors experienced declines, including financial activities with a loss of 16,000 jobs, professional and business services down by 11,000, and natural resources and mining decreased by 1,000 jobs.

Significant employment growth was observed in the Northeast, which added 56,000 jobs. Companies employing between 50 and 499 workers were responsible for a gain of 54,000 jobs.

ADP’s Chief Economist, Nela Richardson, praised the report, stating, “It’s a strong report. After a three-month slowdown, job creation rebounded and pay growth remained solid.” Base pay across sectors saw a rise of 3.2% from the previous year, while gross pay accelerated by 4.7%.

The ADP employment count precedes the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ nonfarm payrolls report, anticipated for release on Friday. Market expectations indicate a gain of 84,000 jobs, a decrease from the prior month’s increase of 162,000 jobs, with the unemployment rate projected to remain steady at 4.1%.

This report aligns with sentiments expressed by multiple Federal Reserve officials, affirming that the labor market appears stable following growth concerns from earlier in 2025. Policymakers are now primarily focused on combating persistent inflation, which recently led to a quarter percentage point increase in benchmark borrowing rates.
