Supermassive Games Faces Layoffs, Losing Over 70 Employees
- Supermassive Games lays off over 70 staff, confirmed layoffs become effective this week.
- The studio had previously announced a redundancy process in August, anticipating up to 75 job losses.
- This follows prior layoffs in July 2025, wherein 36 employees were let go.
Supermassive Games, known for titles like Directive 8020 and Until Dawn, has experienced significant layoffs, resulting in the departure of over 70 staff members this week. The company had previously signaled the potential for job losses in August, stating, “We have made the difficult decision to begin a redundancy consultation process, which we anticipate will result in the loss of up to 75 of our colleagues. This is a necessary step to ensure the sustainability of our company.”
The layoffs appear to be finalized, with Frank Tindle, the now-former IT and facilities director, announcing his departure on LinkedIn. He expressed his sentiments by stating, “More than 70 brilliant people are leaving Supermassive: developers, artists, producers, QA, operations and more. Any studio would be lucky to have them. If you’re hiring, DM me and I’ll make the introduction.”
This is not the first instance of job cuts at Supermassive Games. In July 2025, the studio confirmed it would lay off up to 36 employees to “adapt our team structure to better align with recent industry changes.” This restructuring contributed to the delay of Directive 8020, which was ultimately released in May.
Directive 8020 received mixed reactions, with the studio’s approach to sci-fi horror prompting a divide among players, who debated the quality of its characters versus its gameplay mechanics. Despite these challenges, Supermassive continues to produce distinctive narrative-driven titles, highlighting their commitment to engaging a dedicated fan base. The hope remains that the studio navigates through these turbulent times, enabling impacted employees to find new opportunities.
