Infinity Ward Unveils DMZ Mode: What Secrets Will This New Call of Duty Extraction Shooter Reveal?

Date:

Infinity Ward Expands DMZ Mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • Infinity Ward is enhancing DMZ, the extraction shooter mode in Modern Warfare 4, focusing on combat over looting.
  • DMZ features unique progression and an expansive map, Haijin, with a dynamic AI enemy system.
  • The mode launches on October 23 for multiple platforms, alongside key gameplay changes in Modern Warfare 4 and Warzone.

Infinity Ward is heavily promoting DMZ, the extraction shooter mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, as a central aspect of the franchise. In a comprehensive blog post and developer diary, the studio outlines their vision for DMZ, building upon the previous year’s Modern Warfare 2 DMZ beta.

The studio envisions DMZ as a pivotal genre addition, branding it as the “action extraction shooter.” This designation underscores a commitment to prioritizing combat engagement rather than the typical menu navigation and looting typical of similar modes. Although elements of looting and navigation are present, the user interface is optimized for quick access and fluid gameplay.

DMZ introduces a distinct progression system featuring 70 levels that players can ascend exclusively through gameplay. It operates with its own economy of in-game currency and crafting materials that carry over between rounds, effectively creating a standalone experience. Additionally, certain aspects like weapon progression are synchronized with Modern Warfare 4’s multiplayer and Warzone modes.

The map for DMZ, called Haijin, boasts the highest density of enemy AI that Infinity Ward has ever created. Players are encouraged to undertake missions and side operations for experience points, exploring the map and engaging with various opponents, including other players. A new deployment screen allows players to select mission types before entering matches, streamlining the preparation process while still allowing organic mission discovery during gameplay.

Infinity Ward has intensified the AI enemies’ challenge level and expanded the range of difficulty tiers for a more varied gameplay experience. Enemies are categorized into four tiers, with the most formidable known as Commanders, who are guarded by groups of tougher adversaries that must be dealt with before confronting the Commander.

An enhanced meta progression system has been implemented, allowing players to explore a Forward Operating Base (FOB) where they can engage with various interactive stations. This area, reminiscent of the Hideout from Escape from Tarkov, facilitates player interaction and preparation.

At the FOB, players can manage their active operators, view their stash, create loadouts, customize weapons, test them, accept missions referred to as Orders, and open loot packs. The FOB is also equipped with a 3D printer that utilizes resources obtained from missions to create valuable items.

Additionally, the FOB features a vendor offering weapons and items for in-game currency, a display case for collected dog tags, a bounty leaderboard for top PvP players, and a boss board providing intel on powerful AI enemies present in the game.

Recently, Infinity Ward announced key gameplay adjustments for Modern Warfare 4 and Warzone, including a toggle for silly skins and modifications to double XP tokens to count down during matches rather than in real-time.
