A modder known as Sergious has successfully transformed Diablo 2 into a virtual reality experience. This initiative aims to immerse players in one of the most popular titles from the Diablo franchise.
Footage shared on Reddit illustrates the gameplay from a first-person perspective, where the Sorceress navigates the gloomy starting fields, casting fireballs at nearby zombies and other adversaries. The mod reveals a functional interface, with the player’s health, mana pools, and toolbar displayed on the left forearm, along with an inventory on their belt and a map in hand.
The Diablo 2 VR mod, developed by Sergious (Reddit username: Fantastic-Author2736), is also accessible on GitHub for those interested in trying it out. It was created using FlatVR and BodyWalk, although BodyWalk is not necessary to experience the mod.
Viewing Diablo’s world through the character’s perspective adds a remarkable atmospheric quality, contrasting the usual top-down isometric view. This novelty has sparked curiosity about how the game might operate with a more intimate, over-the-shoulder or first-person camera angle. Expectations were high for this perspective in the recently announced Diablo 5 at BlizzCon, although it seems this vision will not be realized.
In the realm of virtual reality, Valve has unveiled its anticipated Steam Frame headset, which has received favorable reviews on Eurogamer. Priced at £889 for the base version, it promises a comfortable and impressive wireless VR experience, along with the ability to engage with non-VR titles in a hybrid format. This could provide a unique way to enjoy other Diablo games while Sergious continues to refine the Diablo 2 VR mod.
