Microsoft Plans Multi-Device Family for Next-Gen Xbox Consoles

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • Microsoft aims to introduce a family of devices for the next generation of Xbox consoles.
  • Xbox CEO Asha Sharma emphasized the need for multiple solutions to serve diverse gaming needs.
  • Project Helix, the codename for the upcoming hardware, suggests a hybrid nature for the new consoles.

Microsoft has confirmed its intention to develop a range of Xbox devices for the next and 10th generation of consoles, combining a main console with a portable gaming solution. This was stated by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma during a company ‘town hall’ meeting.

Sharma highlighted the vision for a “family of devices for Gen-10,” asserting that “there is not one device that fits all.” In discussing the future of Xbox, she acknowledged that while there will be a strong console at the forefront, a significant number of gamers are on the go, necessitating a portable option.

Sharma noted, “We will certainly have a great console first,” while also recognizing that partnerships will play a crucial role in delivering other device offerings. She expressed excitement over the progress of the operating system being developed for these upcoming devices.

This approach to a multi-device ecosystem is not entirely new for Microsoft, as it has employed a similar strategy in the current generation with the Xbox Series S serving as a more accessible alternative to the Xbox Series X. Additionally, partnerships like that with Asus have helped offer portable Xbox experiences.

Sharma’s comments echo previous statements made regarding Project Helix, which aims to unify Xbox and PC gaming experiences. However, details about whether this new console family will include a disc-drive remain unaddressed.

A pressing concern for Microsoft’s next-generation plans is the ongoing memory component crisis affecting hardware costs globally. In response, Sharma has indicated the company is exploring “radically different business models” to ensure affordability for consumers in light of inflationary pressures on console prices.
