Infinity Ward to Launch DMZ Mode Before Modern Warfare 4’s Official Release
- DMZ, an extraction shooter mode, will be available on 20th October for Digital pre-orders.
- Campaign access begins on 16th October, with full launch and multiplayer on 23rd October.
- Infinity Ward addresses confusion over a potential PvE-only mode after an option was removed from a trailer.
In a notable announcement, Infinity Ward revealed that the extraction shooter mode known as DMZ will be available prior to the official launch of Modern Warfare 4. Starting on 20th October, players who digitally pre-order the game can participate in DMZ.
Modern Warfare 4 now features three distinct release dates: the campaign becomes accessible on 16th October, DMZ opens four days later on the 20th, and the official launch, during which multiplayer becomes available, is set for 23rd October.
While Infinity Ward has previously provided early access to campaign modes in prior Modern Warfare titles, this is the first instance of offering early access to a multiplayer mode like DMZ. This strategy may effectively engage streamers and build anticipation for the game, providing periodic excitement leading up to the official launch. Additionally, it allows players interested in DMZ to engage without the pressure of advancing in the multiplayer mode.
DMZ features independent progression, meaning players participating early could gain a strategic advantage by accumulating items and enhancing their map knowledge through additional gameplay time.
In a related topic, Infinity Ward held a Reddit Q&A where a question arose regarding a possible PvE-only playlist. A recent gameplay preview displayed a Single Squad Mission option, which the community interpreted as a no-players mode. The option later vanished from a subsequent trailer, creating some uncertainty. Infinity Ward clarified the situation, stating, “The playlist you saw is a developer playlist that was never intended to be for public use, it lets our team load into a match alone to work.” They noted that players can opt to play solo by turning off squad fill, but that does not guarantee the absence of other players.
Despite this explanation, there remains skepticism regarding the Single Squad mode being strictly limited to developers, as such modes typically don’t require unique icons, and the lack of image blurring in promotional materials raises questions.
Modern Warfare 4 is set to officially launch on 23rd October across PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch 2.
