Anthropic’s Claude AI Update Blocks Cloning of Existing Games
- Claude AI update restricts creation of game clones, allowing only original games.
- Chasm’s tweet revealed the update’s new guidelines, effective around October 27.
- Users report difficulties in developing digital board game modules as a result.
An update to Anthropic’s Claude AI software prohibits the creation of clones or copies of existing games, allowing the generation of only “original” games. This change was brought to attention by X user Chasm, who shared a screenshot of the new guidelines reportedly implemented around October 27. The guidelines state, “Do build original games, games in a genre, and games from the user’s own designs and assets. Don’t build a recreation of a specific existing game, even if it is renamed or called original.”
While Anthropic has not released an official statement regarding the updated rules, technical staff member Addy Osmani commented on Chasm’s post, affirming the authenticity of the changes. Osmani noted that the adjustments were made to prevent IP infringement in accordance with their usage policy, while still permitting the creation of original games and those incorporating user-generated assets.
After the implementation of this new guideline, users on GitHub reported various challenges arising from the change. Issues included being restricted from developing digital modules for board games and from recreating commercially available board games for personal use. Eurogamer has reached out to Anthropic for comments on the policy alteration and their position on AI-generated game clones.
This update comes amid growing criticism of AI-generated copies of games, with gaming communities expressing their discontent and developers removing public demos due to concerns over work theft. Instances of AI-assisted replicas of popular games, such as a browser-playing version of Mario Kart 8, have surfaced, but were rapidly taken down, likely following legal action from Nintendo.
Despite Claude’s restrictions on copying games, other AI tools like Deepseek remain unrestricted, suggesting that the challenges of game copying will persist. However, given Claude’s standing as one of the leading commercial AI tools, this update is expected to contribute positively toward mitigating the issue.
