Pioneering anime producer and director Masayasu Sagisu has passed away at the age of 93. The heartbreaking news was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by his nephew, acclaimed composer Shiro Sagisu, confirming that the industry veteran died on July 12 following a private family funeral.

A Legacy Shaping Early Anime History at Eiken and TCJ Animation

Born in Tokyo in 1932, Masayasu Sagisu came from a deeply influential creative family as the younger brother of director and producer Sōji Ushio. Over his remarkable career, Sagisu left an indelible mark on the anime industry as a driving force at Eiken (formerly known as TCJ Animation), helping to shape the golden era of television animation through landmark titles such as Tetsujin 28, 8 Man, Super Jetter, Space Boy Soran, and the historic cultural staple Sazae-san.
