Prince Demands Creative Control in Guest Appearance on ‘New Girl’
In a surprising turn of events, Prince directly reached out to Zooey Deschanel and Hannah Simone to appear on the hit show ‘New Girl.’ According to showrunner Liz Meriwether, the artist expressed his desire to join the cast in 2014 and was quite specific about his contributions.
Initially, Prince declined a second-season episode titled “Virgins,” which Meriwether described as “too racy” in hindsight. Instead, he showed interest in a project coinciding with a post-Super Bowl time slot, which series producer Dave Baer labeled “perfect timing.” Prince wanted not only to attend the show’s party scenes but also to feature in the central romance, declaring himself a “Nick and Jess shipper.”
His involvement did not stop there. Meriwether revealed Prince’s extensive list of demands, including choosing the name of a non-speaking chef character, the wardrobe for various characters, and other set designs like paintings and linens. He even had a piece of art—a poem in the form of an egg—flown from Minnesota to embellish the set.
During filming, Prince suggested an alternative comedic moment while preparing a scene aimed at surprising Jess in a dark closet. He proposed using a lighter under his chin for dramatic effect instead of a flashlight. Meriwether recalled, “I tried to stay cool… ‘Yeah, that’s funnier. Let’s do that.’” She reflected on the experience as one of the greatest privileges of her career.
