Debt Dilemma: Why Blackstone Says AI Growth Needs a Bold Equity Boost!

Date:

Blackstone’s Jon Gray Highlights Need for Increased Equity Financing in AI Infrastructure

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • Investors need to brace for more equity in the artificial intelligence space as demand surges.
  • Pimco’s CEO cautions that AI financing might overwhelm market capabilities, estimating $10 trillion in spending.
  • Blackstone reported a 20-fold increase in AI spending among its portfolio companies over the past year.

Jon Gray, president and chief operating officer of Blackstone Inc., emphasized the necessity for additional equity financing to support the growing demands of artificial intelligence infrastructure. Speaking at the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s Global Financial Leaders’ Investment Summit on November 3, 2026, Gray discussed the rising concentration risks debt investors face as they finance leading companies in the AI sector.

Gray noted that while shareholders can benefit from a company’s growth, lenders typically encounter capped returns, which are limited to interest and principal repayments. This disparity underscores the urgency for more equity in the market. “There’s going to be more equity needed across this space to keep up with these enormous demands,” he stated.

Joining him on the panel, Pimco CEO Emmanuel Roman warned that the sheer scale of AI financing might be “too much” for markets to absorb. He projected that AI-related capital expenditures could reach approximately $10 trillion over the next five years, referencing an estimate from General Atlantic CEO Bill Ford. Roman also reported that about $550 billion in AI debt had been issued this year, highlighting the significant gap between current funding and future requirements.

Roman added that the cumulative demand would be “gigantic,” especially when compared to a global corporate bond market valued at roughly $20 trillion. “At some point in time, it’s going to be too much,” he cautioned.

In a related analysis, Goldman Sachs reported that global data center demand would necessitate about $8.5 trillion in capital investment within the next five years. Gray indicated that financing this expansion would require a blend of public markets, banks, and private capital, as companies seek structured transactions to mitigate debt exposure. He also mentioned that revenues from hyperscale computing providers would contribute to this funding.

Despite the formidable challenges in securing necessary resources and infrastructure, Gray maintained a positive outlook on AI development, asserting that the demand for computing power is currently “running well ahead of supply.” He revealed that AI-related expenditures within Blackstone’s portfolio companies surged 20-fold in the past year, driven by efficiencies in coding, customer engagement, and content creation.

Gray concluded that although the pathways to meeting burgeoning demand are fraught with difficulties—ranging from site acquisition to securing permits and capital—the urgency for innovation and creativity in financing has never been greater.
