Employers are retaining workers despite a weak hiring environment, leading to weekly jobless claims dropping to their lowest levels in nearly six decades. According to the Labor Department, initial filings for unemployment insurance decreased to a seasonally adjusted 194,000 for the week ending October 17, 2026.

This figure is a slight improvement from the 189,000 claims reported for the week of July 18, marking the lowest point since the late 1960s. Claims averaged 212,000 over the past year, with the four-week moving average now at 197,750.

These statistics emerge in the context of a labor market facing uncertainty. Nonfarm payrolls grew by just 29,000 in September 2026, with an average monthly increase of only 69,000 for the year. The unemployment rate increased to 4.2%, largely due to a notable rise in labor force participation. Layoffs remained modest, with a decrease of 61,000 in August, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics released on September 29.

Over the past 12 months, the layoff rate as a share of the total workforce dropped to 1%, down by 0.2 percentage points. Job openings have remained relatively stable during this period.

Meanwhile, Federal Reserve officials are scheduled to meet next week to announce their latest decision on interest rates. In response to recent trends, policymakers have described the labor market as a source of strength but emphasized the ongoing inflation issues that have kept price increases above the central bank’s target of 2%.

Market expectations suggest the Fed will refrain from raising interest rates in October, but a quarter-point increase is anticipated in December.
