Insomniac’s Wolverine Tops US Video Game Sales in September
- Marvel’s Wolverine, released mid-September, led US video game sales.
- The game achieved the highest launch month dollar sales since Helldivers 2.
- PS5 console sales surged by 43%, boosted by Wolverine’s release.
Despite a mixed critical reception, Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine has emerged as the top-selling video game in the US for September, having launched halfway through the month. According to market analysis firm Circana, the sales figures encompass both digital and retail purchases.
Circana analyst Mat Piscatella highlighted that Wolverine recorded “the highest launch month dollar sales” for a Sony-published game since Helldivers 2, which was released in February 2024. It is noteworthy that Helldivers 2 was available on PC and PlayStation 5, while Wolverine is an exclusive title for the PS5. Furthermore, with a launch price of $70 compared to Helldivers 2’s $40, Wolverine’s sales figures reflect a different market dynamic, suggesting fewer copies needed to be sold to reach a similar revenue milestone.
The release of Wolverine appears to positively impact PS5 sales, as the console experienced a 43 percent increase in dollar sales compared to the same period last year. This rise is partially attributed to the current higher price of the PS5. In terms of unit sales, the PS5 was the best-selling console for the month, marking a 22 percent increase year-over-year. In contrast, sales for the Switch 2 and Xbox saw declines of 14 percent and 27 percent, respectively, with Xbox achieving its lowest unit sales for a September, surpassing the previous record set in September 2025.
September was a particularly active month for game releases, featuring eight new titles in the top ten sales list. Notable entries included The Blood of Dawnwalker, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave (exclusive to Switch 2), and Wardogs (exclusive to PC). Among these was NBA 2K27, which, despite not reaching the top position in September, managed to surpass Resident Evil Requiem as the best-selling game of the year thus far, although this lead may be challenged with the upcoming GTA 6 release.
Looking ahead, November’s report from Circana is highly anticipated due to the launch of GTA 6, while October will also garner attention with the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, representing another significant title of 2026.
