AI-Driven Job Growth on Wall Street Outpaces Job Losses

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • AI-related job postings at major banks increased by 49% in 2026 compared to 2025, totaling 139,819 listings.
  • The most sought-after skill in this sector is agent orchestration, which saw a 1,721% rise in interest.
  • Generative AI managers earn a median base salary around $190,000, reflecting the high demand for AI expertise.

In a notable trend, artificial intelligence is shaping the job market on Wall Street not by replacing jobs, but by creating new ones. An analysis by Draup, a hiring data firm, revealed a 49% increase in AI-related job postings at banks such as JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, and Capital One in 2026, resulting in a total of 139,819 listings compared to 2025.

The most rapidly emerging area is agent orchestration, with job references for this skill skyrocketing by 1,721% this year. Draup’s CEO, Vijay Swaminathan, emphasized its significance, stating, “This is arguably the hottest skill on Wall Street.” He noted that organizations are looking for talent proficient in both data and AI integration.

This growth indicates that Wall Street banks are advancing their AI strategies beyond the use of chatbots to a more complex framework involving numerous digital agents. These agents are expected to enhance productivity and automate repetitive tasks, thereby increasing the efficiency of labor within financial institutions.

Historically, the AI job market on Wall Street was dominated by engineers and data scientists responsible for developing models. However, the current surge in hiring includes positions focused on embedding AI into business functions. Implementing AI often requires multiple specialized agents, each performing different tasks, such as data inspection or compliance verification.

Individuals engaged in these processes are known as forward-deployed engineers, who need a blend of technical and domain-specific knowledge across various areas, including trading and human resources. Swaminathan remarked on the intricacies involved, noting, “There is a lot of complexity in an enterprise… It takes a long time even to automate a simple process.”

Skills in High Demand

Skills that have become critical to the AI buildout encompass not only technical competencies but also the capacity to manage agent functionalities effectively. Interest in tools for developing multi-step workflows, such as LangGraph, grew by 679%, while LlamaIndex and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) saw increases of 291% and 259%, respectively. Furthermore, attention to soft skills like problem-solving, creativity, and assertiveness is becoming increasingly important.

The emphasis on responsible AI systems is also notable, with job postings mentioning “responsible AI” rising by 657% this year. Such roles focus on governance, risk management, and cybersecurity to mitigate potential vulnerabilities associated with third-party technologies.

Governance-related skills account for over 16,000 job references, nearly double the approximately 8,400 for model training and deployment. As the demand for roles linked to generative AI continues to rise, companies are offering attractive salaries. Draup reports that generative AI managers earn a median base salary of about $190,000.

Despite the lucrative compensation, filling these specialized positions is challenging. As a response, many banks are implementing internal reskilling programs to prepare current employees for emerging roles. JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon has discussed significant “huge redeployment plans” as AI transforms the workforce.

Swaminathan concluded by stating, “I think the more we prioritize those soft skills with the right amount of technical skills, people will adapt and learn. It’s a very exciting time for the right talent.”
