U.S. and China Plan Significant Tariff Reductions on $30 Billion in Goods
- U.S. and China to reduce tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods from each country.
- U.S. imports mainly include toys and decorations; China focuses on agricultural products.
- Tariff cuts could significantly boost trade and consumer spending ahead of the holiday season.
BEIJING — The United States and China announced plans to reduce tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods from each country, as revealed in government statements on Monday.
The reduction targets primarily focus on U.S. imports, which include toys, sports equipment, and Christmas decorations. In contrast, China’s list chiefly consists of American agricultural products.
The U.S. government aims to address its record trade deficit with China, which exceeded $202 billion last year, as Chinese exports to the U.S. continue to outpace imports.
Jacob Cooke, CEO of WPIC, noted, “If we see the tariff cuts actually implemented before the holiday season, it could provide a welcome boost to U.S. consumption and to retailers.” Cooke also highlighted the inclusion of competitive categories like hair care and packaged pet food in China’s import list.
The specifics regarding the effective date and extent of the tariff reductions remain unclear. In the previous year, the U.S. and China imposed import tariffs exceeding 40% and more than 30%, respectively, on one another.
Following a truce established last fall, both nations limited further tariff increases, a truce recently extended to January, according to U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
This announcement follows a summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington, D.C., last week, where they discussed creating a U.S.-China “Board of Trade” to facilitate ongoing trade discussions.
Experts anticipate that lowering tariffs could significantly enhance trade, particularly for competitive Chinese firms. Ryan Zhao, director of Jiangsu Green Willow Textile, predicts a 30% growth in sales in the second half of the year if the cuts are enacted.
