World Bank President Affirms Capital Availability Amid AI Concerns
- Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank, confirms that capital is readily available despite fears surrounding AI and rising interest rates.
- The World Bank mobilized $112 billion in funding last year, a substantial increase compared to three years ago.
- Banga emphasizes that emerging markets are leveraging AI for infrastructure projects, differing from developed nations’ funding needs.
Marrakesh, Morocco – On October 13, 2023, during a session at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) meeting, World Bank President Ajay Banga stated that capital resources continue to be available, despite concerns that advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) may lead to increased interest rates. In an interview on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” he remarked, “It’s not really an issue.”
Banga highlighted that the World Bank successfully mobilized $112 billion in the previous year, approximately three times the amount raised three years earlier. He acknowledged that some investors express concerns regarding circular financing and AI-related business models.
However, Banga noted that emerging markets are experiencing less hesitation towards investment, primarily focusing on infrastructure projects such as bridges and roads. He elaborated that these countries are pursuing smaller-scale applications of AI, whereas developed nations are seeking funding to support larger AI integration.
“In general, I still believe that AI is going to be transformative and profitable,” he affirmed, adding, “But everybody sees bumps in the road from here to there, and no one knows when the next bump will come.”
The World Bank, established in 1944, aims to eradicate poverty and promote economic development through global partnerships and financial support. Prior to his appointment as President, Banga served as vice chair at General Atlantic and held the position of CEO at Mastercard.
