Blizzard Unveils World of Warcraft: Forever at BlizzCon
- Blizzard announced release dates for Diablo 5 (2029) and a new StarCraft shooter (2030) at BlizzCon.
- World of Warcraft: Forever, or Classic Plus, reimagines the original game with new content and improvements.
- Blizzard emphasizes WoW: Forever’s potential for new storytelling, marking an evolution rather than a sequel.
At this year’s BlizzCon, Blizzard Entertainment disclosed long-term release dates for Diablo 5, scheduled for 2029, and a new open-world StarCraft shooter set for a 2030 launch, signaling a rare level of transparency regarding their future projects. During the event, the focus also shifted to the World of Warcraft franchise, hinting at a significant announcement.
The highly anticipated revelation was World of Warcraft: Forever, commonly referred to as Classic Plus. This iteration offers a remastered version of the original game, released in 2004/5, enhancing the experience while retaining its familiar essence. This represents a pivotal moment in the nearly 22-year history of World of Warcraft.
World of Warcraft: Forever will feature new zones and expansions to existing ones, along with new dungeons, raids, skills, talents, race and class combinations, a new playable race called the Skyborne, a new battleground, and 100 fresh quests. The update includes enhancements to graphics, a character toggle between SD and HD visuals, new items, profession features, reputation rewards, and account-wide benefits.
Importantly, WoW: Forever will diverge from the original game’s storyline, allowing for flexibility and innovation in narrative development. “The future is untold,” stated Holly Longdale, the executive producer of World of Warcraft, during her presentation at BlizzCon. “We may see stories that could have happened, and some that didn’t happen at all.”
While WoW: Forever signifies a significant revamp, it is not designed as a sequel. Blizzard has not indicated any plans for a World of Warcraft 2, and insights from a recent IGN interview suggest such a sequel is unlikely. Kris Zierhut, the principal designer for WoW: Forever, reaffirmed the ongoing evolution of the game, citing improvements made to its graphics, rendering, lighting, and server infrastructure over the last 25 years.
Blizzard’s commitment to enhancing the current game is evident, as the franchise continues its Worldsoul Saga trilogy of expansions with a major titan battle anticipated at BlizzCon. Zierhut noted, “It’s not like there’s something wrong with [WoW’s] story. We love the story. So going back to the beginning [with World of Warcraft: Forever], there’s a chance to explore that story in new and different ways.”
Creating a sequel to World of Warcraft, which remains a monumental achievement 22 years post-launch, poses substantial challenges and expenses. Blizzard’s experience with the transition from Overwatch 1 to Overwatch 2 has shown the complications of shifting a large player base. Additionally, the costs and time required to develop a project of such magnitude would be considerable, making it a daunting prospect.
Blizzard previously attempted to create a sci-fi MMO named Titan, which was ultimately scrapped and later reimagined as Overwatch. Given the current economic climate, especially with Xbox cutting 1,600 jobs, the likelihood of Blizzard pursuing a massive new project like WoW 2 appears minimal as the company remains focused on managing its existing franchises.
