After a challenging launch two years ago, Civilization 7 is set to receive significant updates as it marks its 35th anniversary. Developer Firaxis has announced the upcoming free Arc of Tomorrow and the first paid expansion, Earthrise, both scheduled for release in 2027.

The Arc of Tomorrow update introduces the Atomic Age, extending the timeline of playable content from the 1950s into the near future. This expansion adds new buildings, units, and gameplay mechanics tailored to the Atomic Age, which will allow players to start games from this era or trace their civilizations back to Antiquity.

Players can expect new civilisations, leaders, and enhanced nuclear gameplay options, including new Multilateral Agreements that allow leaders to respond collectively to escalating global tensions involving nuclear weaponry. Additionally, players will gain new empire management features, such as transforming Settlements into City-States. City-States will enable Proxy Warfare, focusing on limited conflicts rather than total war.

Firaxis emphasized the significance of depicting the “uncertainty and fear” of recent history while also celebrating moments of progress and hope. The update will allow players to create Great Works of Film, influencing gameplay based on the quality of the productions. Players will also be able to manufacture new resources like Enriched Uranium.

Sign-ups for playtesting of the Arc of Tomorrow update begin this year, with further details available through Firaxis’ dedicated workshop site.

Looking ahead, the Earthrise expansion will explore space-themed mechanics throughout various historical ages. Players may engage in celestial charting and early orbital missions, eventually establishing space agencies in the Atomic Age. The expansion aims to incorporate environmental adaptability, allowing for terrain modifications and environmental engineering to combat climate change and natural disasters.

While specific details regarding Earthrise are limited, both the Arc of Tomorrow update and the Earthrise expansion follow the previous feedback regarding an extensive amount of DLC priced over £100, with a community eager for substantive improvements. Additionally, a new 1.5.0 update for Civilization 7 is expected to launch later this month, introducing features such as the True Start Location Earth map and various enhancements to diplomacy and resource management.
