MobyGames Introduces Premium Tier for Developers to Claim Game Credits
- MobyGames launches a new premium tier for developers to claim game credits.
- The beta version of MobyGames Professional was released in June, with a full rollout expected in autumn.
- Subscription costs $14.99 monthly, with an introductory 45-day free trial available.
Video game database MobyGames has announced a new feature allowing developers to claim their game credits and create personalized portfolios through a premium subscription service called MobyGames Professional. This service initiated its beta phase in June and is set for a full release in the autumn of 2023.
Reece Denzel, product manager at MobyGames, shared insights during Gamescom, stating that signups have been “great,” with “thousands of developers” already active on the platform. The system includes a verification process to ensure the accuracy of claimed credits, although it does not permit users to modify structural information regarding their credits.
Denzel elaborated on the verification process, indicating that it involves a human-driven system to confirm identities. “There’s two parts to that. One is making sure that people are who they say they are… The actual way that we do credits and credit verifications has not changed… since Atari has been involved,” he explained. Atari acquired MobyGames in March 2022.
Importantly, while developers can update personal details on their pages, they cannot reinsert themselves into credits from which they were previously omitted. The issue of developers being dropped from credits has been a longstanding concern in the industry, illustrated by cases such as the missing names in the credits for Donkey Kong Country Returns HD and complaints from individuals surrounding Metroid Prime Remastered.
These frustrations also extend to translators hired by external firms, who have expressed dissatisfaction over lacking credit recognition in high-profile games.
MobyGames Professional is priced at $14.99 per month, or $11.99 per month for an annual subscription. Interested users can take advantage of a 45-day free trial currently offered on the platform.
