The Coalition Navigates Cuts Amid Gears of War: E-Day Launch
- The Coalition, part of Microsoft, has largely avoided layoffs following recent cuts by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma.
- Many employees fear potential layoffs after the launch of Gears of War: E-Day, which has received positive feedback.
- Studio head Mike Crump emphasizes the focus on controlling what can be controlled, hinting at the importance of showcasing Xbox’s capabilities.
The Coalition, the Microsoft-owned developer behind Gears of War: E-Day, Gears 4, and Gears 5, has mostly evaded the extensive layoffs initiated by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, aimed at restoring profitability within the gaming division.
However, as reported by Eurogamer, there are growing concerns among staff at The Coalition that layoffs may occur soon after the release of Gears of War: E-Day, which could affect their eligibility for bonuses.
In a recent interview with the BBC, studio head Mike Crump addressed these reports and discussed the future of the Canadian studio, though he did not provide specific details about potential cuts.
“What I say to myself, what I say to the team, is we just need to focus on the things that we can control,” Crump remarked. “For us that’s about shipping a great game that people are going to love, and I feel like, as a team, we’ve done that.”
Gears of War: E-Day has garnered positive reviews from critics and players, achieving the series’ best sales figures on Steam. In reviewing the campaign, Eurogamer’s Dom Peppiatt noted that the game demonstrates continued viability within the long-standing franchise.
Despite this success, a looming question remains: will it be sufficient to secure The Coalition’s future and persuade Xbox to invest in upcoming projects? E-Day is an Xbox console exclusive, a decision reportedly made hastily just before its major summer reveal, which may restrict its sales reach.
“Gears has been an exclusive franchise to Xbox for 20 years now. It’s sort of entwined deeply with the brand,” Crump stated.
When asked how the studio measures its success, Crump emphasized that while sales numbers are crucial, other factors are also considered. He stated, “We measure things like, are we showcasing the platform? Are we pushing the hardware to its limits? Are we showcasing what the Xbox is capable of?”
“Our goal basically is to be the best-looking game on the Xbox and really show the industry what’s possible with our hardware,” he added.
Following the release of Gears 5 in 2019, The Coalition dedicated seven years to the development of Gears of War: E-Day. Crump regards E-Day as a “great foundation” for subsequent sequels and assures that the next installment “will not take nearly as long” to develop; however, no future projects have been officially announced by the studio.
