Gears of War: E-Day Sales Reveal Impact of Game Pass Subscriptions

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • Gears of War: E-Day sold approximately 230,000 copies since early access on October 1.
  • 1.7 million players accessed the game via Game Pass, with over 722,000 purchasing the $30 Premium Edition upgrade.
  • Total revenue from E-Day has reportedly surpassed $37 million.

Gears of War: E-Day’s sales figures are reportedly lower than anticipated for a marquee Xbox title, but the sales data may not fully reflect the game’s financial performance. Significant revenue has been generated from Game Pass subscribers opting for the Premium Edition upgrade.

According to estimates from Alinea Analytics’ Rhys Elliott, Xbox has sold around 230,000 copies of Gears of War: E-Day since its advance-access release on October 1; of those, 168,000 copies were sold on Steam, while 62,000 were purchased on Xbox consoles and PC.

The influence of Game Pass on these numbers is notable, as around 1.7 million players engaged with the game through their subscriptions. Additionally, over 722,000 of those players bought the game’s $30 Premium Edition upgrade.

The Premium Edition, priced at $99.99, allowed early access starting October 1, while Game Pass subscribers could opt for a $30 upgrade for early play and additional content. E-Day officially launched for general Game Pass subscribers and Standard Edition purchasers on October 6.

Considering all sales, microtransactions, and Premium Edition upgrades, Gears of War: E-Day is reported to have generated more than $37 million, with nearly a million players contributing financially to the game’s success.

Rhys Elliott suggested that, “In a world without day-one Game Pass, many of these folks would have bought E-Day at $70,” stating that players paid $30 for early access to content they do not outright own. The analyst remarked on the perception that Xbox is charging its premium customers less than they might otherwise pay.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has taken steps to prevent new Call of Duty games from launching directly onto Game Pass, indicating a shift in strategy that may also affect future high-profile titles like Gears of War.

In terms of player demographics, over 80% of E-Day players on Xbox had previously engaged with other Gears games or popular titles like Call of Duty, Fortnite, and GTA 5. On Steam, 72% of players came from Counter-Strike, while 65% were from Helldivers 2, highlighting the similarities in gameplay focus particularly in E-Day’s Horde Siege mode.

Mike Crump, head of The Coalition, asserted that E-Day serves as a “great foundation” for future sequels and aimed to expedite development for the next installment, indicating it won’t “take nearly as long” compared to the prior seven-year gap between entries. Following the game’s launch, concerns have been raised among studio members about potential layoffs in the wake of post-launch adjustments.

Eurogamer’s review of Gears of War: E-Day remarked, “Gears of War: E-Day is a game of contrasts: conservative by its very nature, but with enough technical proficiency and iterative thinking to make its old-fashioned ideas feel competent and engaging,” commenting on the blend of cutting-edge graphics with traditional gameplay design that caters to nostalgia.
