Grand Theft Auto 6 Could Include Controversial Sex Scenes

Grand Theft Auto 6 may feature explicit sex scenes, according to an age-rating description found on the PlayStation Store. This information can be seen in the New Zealand and Australian versions of the Store, which specifically mentions “sex scenes” in the game.
If accurate, this would make GTA 6 the first title in the series to explicitly include sexual intercourse, a significant departure from earlier titles. The series had previously faced backlash over the infamous Hot Coffee mod scandal from GTA: San Andreas, where a removed mini-game featuring sexual content was unearthed post-release.
Historically, while GTA titles have included suggestive interactions with sex workers and some nudity, overt sexual encounters have typically occurred off-screen. Previous instances, such as a brief sex scene in GTA 4’s The Ballad of Gay Tony, involved limited visuals with characters clothed, and depictions of oral sex were generally obscured.
However, the reliability of the age-rating descriptions noted by IGN is uncertain. These details are not searchable on the official age-rating boards, despite ESRB, PEGI, and Australian Ratings Board logos being visible on the PlayStation Store, likely due to restrictions on disclosing complete listings.
Even if the descriptions are valid, the term “sex scenes” does not necessarily indicate graphic sexual content. The UK version of the PS Store does reference “sexual content” and includes a symbol for “sex”. This symbol is found alongside titles like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, both of which contain graphic sexually explicit scenes. The presence of PEGI’s “sex” symbol here, unlike its absence for other titles such as The Blood of Dawnwalker, which has partial nudity and sexual content, suggests stronger content could be on the horizon for GTA 6.
With the plot centering around a couple, Jason and Lucia, the presence of sex scenes appears plausible, especially given their romance is a crucial aspect of the narrative. A sequence reminiscent of a sex scene has been noted in the official GTA 6 trailer, available here (starting at 1:12).
Since the release of GTA 5 in 2013, sexual content in gaming has become more mainstream, evident in several titles, including Cyberpunk 2077 and Baldur’s Gate 3. Thus, the inclusion of graphic sexual scenes in GTA 6 would not be surprising.
