Nintendo Announces New 2D Metroid Title: Metroid Ravenous

During today’s Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo announced the upcoming 2D Metroid game titled Metroid Ravenous. The debut trailer showcased protagonist Samus Aran confronting a range of new enemies that drain her energy, hinting at a darker narrative direction. “It’s eat or be eaten,” says Samus to an enemy at the trailer’s conclusion, suggesting a continuation of the themes explored in the critically acclaimed Metroid Dread.
Metroid Ravenous is set to launch on January 28, 2027. The game will include a special edition that features two new amiibo figures. Prior to today’s announcement, the game had surfaced in a ratings board listing in Brazil, indicating that news of its development had already made waves.
Reviewing Metroid Dread, critic Martin Robinson awarded a perfect score of 5/5, calling it “A stylish, visually sumptuous return for 2D Metroid, and an adventure that proudly sits alongside the series’ best.” With the release of Ravenous, expectations are high that Mercury Steam, alongside Nintendo, can sustain this level of quality and innovation.
