Capcom Unveils Teostra in Extended Trailer for Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance at Tokyo Game Show
- Capcom launched an extended trailer for Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance at Tokyo Game Show, featuring Teostra as a huntable monster.
- The upcoming expansion will introduce gameplay refinements and a new Boost Bracer mechanic for enhanced combat strategy.
- The expansion is set to release in 2027, while the game will be available on Switch 2 on December 4, 2023.
Capcom has kicked off its marketing campaign for Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, debuting an extended version of the official trailer today at the Tokyo Game Show. This trailer prominently features Teostra, the explosion-prone leonine monster known for its blast effects and fiery breath.
Teostra, an Elder Dragon first introduced in Monster Hunter 2 in 2006, is notorious for its challenging encounters. While Capcom has improved the game’s performance over time, the trailer’s depiction of Teostra’s fiery attacks suggests potential challenges with bitrate quality, raising concerns about in-game performance.
Observations from the trailer indicate that the encounter with Teostra may be more difficult than before. The trailer, lasting only three minutes, suggests that actual gameplay could take significantly longer. The footage reveals Capcom’s enhancements to Teostra’s combat utility compared to its last appearance in Monster Hunter Rise – Sunbreak.
Teostra features signature divebomb attacks that trigger multiple blast novas, but the new footage implies the monster may also have charging follow-ups. This evolution in attack patterns could force players to perfect their dodging abilities to avoid Teostra’s follow-up strikes.
To aid gameplay, Capcom is introducing a ‘Boost Bracer’ mechanic. According to the developers, players can build energy through aggressive attacks and activate enhancements with specific actions. “Boost enables abilities such as new combos and enhanced attacks, allowing you to seize control of the powerful threats that await you,” they explained.
A common criticism of Monster Hunter Wilds since its release has been its perceived ease, particularly when compared to earlier entries in the series. However, Capcom’s updates and the Ascendance expansion appear to address this feedback. Players familiar with the challenging Omega Planetes crossover event from Final Fantasy 14 may recognize the new difficulty level.
Capcom’s trailer description highlights additional gameplay improvements, such as quicker weapon swapping, equipment changes outside the tent using the Item Box, and more. These enhancements will be accessible in the base game and the Ascendance expansion.
According to Capcom, hunters can anticipate battling Teostra when the substantial expansion launches in 2027. Specific release dates have yet to be disclosed. Meanwhile, players can look forward to accessing Monster Hunter Wilds on Switch 2, scheduled for release on December 4, 2023.
