Nintendo’s Winning Streak Continues with Switch 2 and Film Ventures

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • Nintendo Switch 2 became the fastest-selling video game hardware in US history, surpassing PS4.
  • Switch 2 sales reached nearly 20 million within one year of its release, making it the second-fastest-selling console in US history.
  • Nintendo is expanding its cinematic presence with an upcoming Legend of Zelda movie scheduled for release in April.

Nintendo is currently experiencing significant success, with the Switch 2 recognized as the fastest-selling video game hardware device in US history, overtaking the PS4’s previous record. As of early this year, the Switch 2 has reached nearly 20 million sales, establishing itself as the second-fastest-selling console in US history. This surge in sales is fueled by hits like Pokopia and various first-party titles, allowing Nintendo to maintain momentum despite the challenges posed by rising hardware prices.

Devon Pritchard, Nintendo of America COO, expressed the company’s enthusiasm about its ongoing momentum. In an interview with Variety, she stated, “We’re at the beginning of Nintendo Switch 2. This is just beginning and we’ve already had some really wonderful experiences, both ours and third-party come to the table.”

Nintendo’s successes are not confined to the gaming sector; the company has also made strides in film. Pritchard highlighted their collaboration with Sony Pictures, announcing an upcoming movie based on The Legend of Zelda, set for release at the end of April. This follows the lucrative success of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which grossed $1 billion, including $372.6 million during its opening weekend.

Pritchard also noted that while they have exciting game developments, such as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, their film partnerships are a significant focus for the future. “Those partnerships and touchpoints with companies like Sony and Sony Pictures around how we can bring those experiences more broadly… I think that’s one of the most exciting things for us over the next few years,” she remarked.

Nintendo is greatly investing in its cinematic aspirations, with recent updates during a dedicated Zelda Direct in September about the forthcoming film titled “The Legend of Zelda.” Although an official trailer has yet to be released, filming in New Zealand has already wrapped, with the shoot beginning in October 2025. Fans are eagerly anticipating footage of the film’s final product.

Reflecting on the competitive media landscape, Pritchard concluded, “There are more channels for content than ever before. Content is available 24/7… Nintendo is focused instead on building experiences that create relationships that last generations.” As Nintendo continues to navigate challenges such as rising hardware prices and a tightening industry, the company appears well-positioned to remain resilient and innovative.
