Phantom Blade Zero Achieves Over 4 Million Sales in Initial 72 Hours

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • Phantom Blade Zero has sold over 4 million copies within its first 72 hours of release.
  • The game peaked at 833,921 concurrent players on Steam, marking it as 2023’s largest launch on the platform.
  • Despite strong sales, it has not surpassed the performance of Black Myth: Wukong, which peaked at over 2.4 million concurrent players.

S-Game, the studio behind Phantom Blade Zero, has announced that its debut title has exceeded 4 million copies sold within the first 72 hours of its launch. This milestone was revealed on the game’s official X account, accompanied by a note of gratitude from the developers. However, no detailed breakdown of sales by platform was provided.

The 4 million sales figure includes transactions across Steam, PlayStation 5, and the Tencent WeGame PC launcher in China. Prior to official release, analyst Rhys Elliott of Alinea Analytics projected that Phantom Blade Zero had already pre-sold over 1 million copies.

At launch, Phantom Blade Zero garnered over 431,000 concurrent players on Steam, a number that rose throughout the weekend, peaking at an impressive 833,921 concurrent players according to data from SteamDB. This total makes it the largest launch on Steam for 2023, surpassing major releases such as Forza Horizon 6, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, The Blood of Dawnwalker, and Ace Combat 8.

Despite this successful launch, Phantom Blade Zero has not yet matched the performance of the Chinese-developed title Black Myth: Wukong, released in 2024. Black Myth reportedly sold around 30 million copies and achieved a peak concurrent player count of 2,415,714.

In a review of Phantom Blade Zero, Emma Kent of Eurogamer praised the game’s animations and environments but critiqued its narrative and consistency, stating, “This game is exceptional in so many areas – the animations, the beautiful environments – and when the combat works, the sense of flow is incredible. Then you walk into a boss battle and feel all that power fade, like you’re waiting your turn to get hits in with a wooden sword.”
