Skate Devs Take a Stand Against Modders: What Happens When You Unlock Paid Cosmetics?

EA and Full Circle Address Modding Controversy for Skate Game

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • EA and Full Circle support player creativity but oppose mods that unlock paid content.
  • The new modding platform ReSkate achieved 350,000 downloads shortly after launch.
  • Developers promise future tools for community creation without compromising their monetization model.

EA and Full Circle, the developer of the early access Skate game (skate.), have expressed support for player creativity but have made it clear that they will not tolerate mods that unlock paid microtransactions or unreleased content. This statement follows the rapid rise of the modding platform ReSkate, which reached 350,000 downloads within hours of its debut, allowing players to engage with the skating simulation offline and offering custom maps and cosmetics.

A developer statement shared on Reddit outlined their position, emphasizing: “Like many of you, we’ve been following the launch of numerous mods for our game. Skateboarding in general is built on community and creative expression, and we support that.” The developers highlighted their intent in creating a sandbox environment in San Vansterdam as a means to foster creativity among players.

However, they clarified, “Where we have to draw the line is when mods or other tools bypass our systems to unlock paid cosmetics, release gated/unreleased content, or profit from these unauthorized assets.” The studio reiterated that this approach undermines the work of artists and developers contributing to the game.

Currently, Full Circle is not taking action against ReSkate or its users but has issued a cautionary note to anyone attempting to democratize aspects of the game’s live service economy. The developers of ReSkate commented to PC Gamer that their goal is not to “replace the live game,” acknowledging the necessity for Full Circle to monetize the game for continued development and ensuring that their platform does not facilitate easy access to premium cosmetics from the official game.

Earlier this year, Full Circle faced challenges, including staff layoffs, which may contribute to the game’s Mixed rating on Steam, driven by player complaints about excessive microtransactions and restrictive content. Despite these criticisms, Eurogamer found merit in skate.’s early access version.
