Sony Unveils Lottery System for PS5 Pro Purchases in Japan
- Sony launches a lottery system for PS5 Pro purchases on its Japanese online store.
- Applications are accepted until October 7; winners notified on October 26.
- Successful applicants must purchase the console within a week for ¥137,980 (approx. £662 / $876).
Sony has announced a lottery system for purchasing the PS5 Pro through its Japanese online store, addressing the issue of high demand versus limited supply. Details regarding this initiative can be found on a new information page on the official Sony website, which confirms the acceptance of applications for PS5 Pro purchases.
To qualify for the lottery, applicants must have a Sony account registered in Japan and have logged more than 60 hours of play over the past two years, measures likely put in place to prevent scalping.
Interested buyers have until October 7 to submit their applications. If applications exceed supply, a lottery will determine who can purchase the PS5 Pro, with winners being notified on October 26. The console is priced at ¥137,980, equivalent to approximately £662 or $876.
Once selected, winners must act quickly; they have one week to finalize their purchase or they will forfeit their opportunity, and the console will return to the lottery pool for other buyers.
This lottery approach comes amid ongoing supply issues impacting the gaming industry, partially due to heightened demand linked to the AI datacenter boom that has contributed to rising prices and diminished stock availability. These challenges have consistently plagued Sony throughout this generation of consoles, disappointing many gaming enthusiasts globally.
A lottery system may ease some of the competitive pressures associated with high-demand items. Similar systems have been successfully implemented in other contexts, such as Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 14 housing system, which resolved housing access conflicts in the game.
