Final Fantasy Resonance, emerging from the closed-down mobile title Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, showcases a captivating blend of vintage aesthetics and contemporary gaming mechanics. This pixel-first RPG, reminiscent of classics like Octopath Traveler, modernizes the essence of traditional turn-based combat while delivering visually stunning HD-2D sprite work. The game, which was previewed at Gamescom 2026, has garnered attention for its nostalgic yet fresh approach to the Final Fantasy franchise.
With the release of a free demo following its reveal at Gamescom, players have a glimpse into what promises to be a significant reinterpretation of the franchise’s classic elements. Director Hiroto Furuya articulated the intention behind the game in an interview with Kotaku, stating, “As a foundation, it’s very important [that] we have knowledge of Final Fantasy’s history… We have the sensibility of knowing Final Fantasy’s history, as well as the general feeling of playing more modern games.” This emphasis on blending nostalgia with innovation is evident in the game’s design.
Furuya further explained that the team drew inspiration primarily from the pixelated works of the series, specifically 1992’s Final Fantasy 5 and 1994’s Final Fantasy 6, when refining the combat system from Brave Exvius. Producer Keisuke Nakashima noted, “The first concept we had in mind, simply put, is what if we take the job system from Final Fantasy 5 and the unique characteristics of each character in Final Fantasy 6, what would that look like?” This exploration of the job system and character traits is central to the game’s combat design.
Moreover, Nakashima elaborated on integrating the stagger mechanic, seen in the FF7 Remake and FF16, into the gameplay formula. He stated, “[That combination] ultimately [formed] into what you see now, where you have these distinct characteristics, but it also allows for that additional customization element.” This approach aims to provide players with diverse team configurations and tactical combat scenarios.
The integration of ‘Visions’—characters from Final Fantasy’s past—adds further depth to the game, creating varied combat experiences. Furuya revealed that at one juncture in development, the team contemplated excluding these iconic characters, stating, “There was a time in development where we explored leaving the Final Fantasy series characters out.” Ultimately, their inclusion enhances both the gameplay mechanics and the visual spectacle, contributing significantly to the game’s overall appeal.
Final Fantasy Resonance is set to launch on October 22, 2026, across multiple platforms, including PC via Steam, PS5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S.
