Struggling in The Blood of Dawnwalker? Here’s Why It Should Feel Challenging!

Balancing Act in The Blood of Dawnwalker: Day and Night Gameplay Dynamics Explained

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • The Blood of Dawnwalker is designed for players to feel less powerful during the day as humans compared to nighttime as vampires.
  • Game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz explains this imbalance supports narrative flexibility and gameplay challenges.
  • The game sold 1 million copies in three days since its early September release, with a major patch expected soon.

In the medieval vampire RPG The Blood of Dawnwalker, players may find it challenging to navigate during the day in human form compared to the night as a vampire. Game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz confirmed that this design is intentional and not meant to be balanced.

“Yes, you should,” Tomaszkiewicz stated regarding the anticipated power difference between the vampire and human forms. He explained that the protagonist, known as the Dawnwalker, was conceived to evoke characteristics similar to a werewolf, being weaker during the day.

Despite the apparent disparities, Tomaszkiewicz assured players that completing the game in human form is possible. This design allows for storytelling that can incorporate various antagonists without the need for increasingly powerful villains, as commonly seen in superhero narratives.

Many players have already noted the significant discrepancies in power, particularly in combat situations. For instance, one player reported failing to breach the vampire Brencis’ castle during the day in human form but succeeded at night when transformed into a vampire.

According to Tomaszkiewicz, several mechanics contribute to the vampire’s superiority. He clarified that a vampire’s claw damage scales with character level, requiring no additional investments to strengthen them. In contrast, humans must find or upgrade weapons to improve combat effectiveness.

Another key difference lies in healing. Human players must create potions to heal themselves during battles; however, vampires can heal by biting enemies or consuming blood vials found throughout the game world. Enhancements to vampire skills mean they can also increase their health beyond the standard limit and have portions of their health bar regenerate automatically after combat.

Additionally, specific vampire skills allow health to be replenished through attacks, underscoring the substantial advantages that the vampire form holds over human form.

This imbalance is somewhat balanced by the protagonist Coen possessing witchcraft abilities that are only available during the day. However, some players have found the narrative connection between being a vampire and a witch to be underexplored.

Tomaszkiewicz indicated that it was crucial for the day and night cycles to provide distinct and engaging experiences. The design team’s concern revolved around ensuring that players could successfully progress through the game’s challenges in human form without facing “blockers.” Activities are spread throughout both forms, making some only achievable at night and others primarily during the day.

“In human form, you have a few ways you can finish the game,” – Konrad Tomaszkiewicz.

In this regard, witchcraft abilities were incorporated to supplement the human character’s skills. While vampires are inherently stronger, human characters with witchcraft can also possess significant advantages.

Players may have preferences for either form, aiming for different endings. Tomaszkiewicz hinted at multiple paths for completing the game as a human, suggesting variety in gameplay choices is fundamental to the player experience.

Since its release in early September, The Blood of Dawnwalker has achieved notable commercial success, selling 1 million copies within the first three days. While it has received strong reviews, some players have raised concerns about performance and technical issues. A major patch is expected in early October to address these concerns.

Despite mixed feedback, the unique time mechanic of the game will remain unchanged. Although it was initially more rigid in early designs, it will not necessarily feature in future installments of the series.
