Valve Launches Pre-Orders for Steam Frame VR Headset Amid Ongoing Hardware Challenges

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • Valve has opened pre-order registration for the £889 / $1,059 Steam Frame VR headset.
  • Developer Pierre-Loup Griffais states ongoing memory and storage issues have minimal impact on plans for the next Steam Deck.
  • Rising hardware prices may challenge the Steam Frame’s market appeal as it enters a competitive landscape.

Valve’s upcoming Steam Frame VR headset recently made headlines as the company commenced pre-order registration for the standalone device priced at £889 / $1,059.

In a recent interview with IGN, Valve’s Pierre-Loup Griffais addressed questions regarding the current memory and storage crisis’s influence on the development of the next Steam Deck. According to Griffais, “Not really,” emphasizing that Valve aims to ensure significant performance improvements for a potential future model.

This sentiment aligns with Valve’s previous communications regarding the Steam Deck’s successor. Griffais reiterated that a viable Steam Deck 2 must present a generational leap in performance, which Valve indicated was not achievable with current technology as of 2023. However, two years later, Valve has stated it has a “pretty good idea” of the next Steam Deck’s design and confirmed its ongoing development process, integrating lessons learned from previous hardware releases.

The persistent memory crisis has severely affected the pricing and availability of Valve’s products, including the Steam Frame VR headset. While Griffin acknowledged the impact of the escalating memory shortage, he did not clarify how significantly it would influence the design process. Companies have been known to raise prices while reducing specifications, as evidenced by recent trends in smartphone launches.

Griffais further specified that Valve’s objectives for the Steam Deck 2 remain unchanged, focusing on user experience and product innovation.

Steam Frame is the final hardware product from the trio Valve announced the previous year, which also included the Steam Controller and Steam Machine. The increasing costs associated with Valve’s hardware lineup pose challenges for the Steam Frame’s market viability, particularly as it targets a niche audience.

In a review by Eurogamer, Matt Wales highlighted that while the hardware design and capabilities of the Steam Frame are commendable, the headset “isn’t a machine for high-end enthusiasts” and does not provide a significantly distinct in-headset experience compared to more affordable alternatives like the Quest 3.
