Call of Duty’s Modern Warfare 4 Shows Declining Player Engagement
- Modern Warfare 4 engagement rates dropped compared to Black Ops 7.
- 19% of PlayStation players engaged with Modern Warfare 4 during its launch week.
- Activision’s statement following the launch was notably less enthusiastic than previous releases.
Speculations regarding a decline in the allure of the Call of Duty franchise continue as player engagement statistics reveal notable trends. U.S. market analysis firm Circana has released data monitoring player activity following the launch of Modern Warfare 4, comparing it to Black Ops 7.
The analysis utilizes Circana’s Player Engagement Tracker, which captures player data from Steam and PlayStation in the U.S. and Xbox worldwide. According to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, 19% of PlayStation users engaged with Modern Warfare 4 in the week ending October 24, while Xbox recorded 17% and Steam 4.2%.
In contrast to these figures, Black Ops 7 saw 23% player engagement on PlayStation, 29% on Xbox, and only 1.5% on Steam during the equivalent launch week last year, indicating a year-over-year decline, excluding Steam’s performance.
During the week ending October 24, Call of Duty ranked within the top ten games across all platforms, sitting just below Fortnite on PlayStation, as confirmed by Circana. The substantial drop in Xbox user activity may be attributed to Modern Warfare 4’s absence from Game Pass at launch— a service that typically boosts player numbers, as seen with Black Ops 7’s release, the last Call of Duty title to debut on Game Pass simultaneously with its premium version.
The reasons for the decrease in player engagement on PlayStation are less clear but could be linked to the successful re-releases of Black Ops 1 and 2 in the summer, which may have lured back lapsed players who are less interested in the newer installments.
Data from sources such as SteamDB indicates that Modern Warfare 4’s launch metrics fall short compared to Black Ops 7 and other recent entries, suggesting a dip in popularity. Following the launch of Modern Warfare 4, Activision’s communications have also conveyed a shift in tone regarding first-week sales, with a singular statement from Xbox CEO Asha Sharma that does not mention the game by name.
Sharma noted, “One of the most celebrated Call of Duty games in its 24-year history, and now $40bn in lifetime franchise revenue.” Last year’s post-launch statement for Black Ops 7 notably emphasized community feedback on gameplay quality while omitting sales figures entirely.
