Valor Mortis Set to Launch at $40 Amid Competitive Fall Release Schedule
- Valor Mortis will launch on October 13 for $40/€40, cheaper than competitors.
- A Deluxe Edition is available for $60/€60, featuring story DLC and weapon skins.
- Developer One More Level emphasizes confidence in their product and the challenges of launching a new IP.
The developers of Valor Mortis have officially announced the game’s pricing structure. Set to retail at $40 / €40, this price point is designed to be more accessible compared to other titles launching during the same period. There is currently a request for clarification regarding the UK pricing.
The team shared their pricing rationale in a statement on X, acknowledging both their confidence in the game and the current economic pressures facing players. “We have had many discussions over the past year about the price of Valor Mortis. We believe the game has the quality, fidelity, and playtime in its 20-hour story to go toe-to-toe with many ‘full price’ titles,” the developers noted. “Still, this fall is stacked and there’s high demand for your time and money.”
Valor Mortis is an ambitious first-person Soulslike game developed by One More Level, known for their work on Ghostrunner. The game is scheduled for release on October 13 and faces tough competition from other high-profile titles such as Gears of War: E-Day, Ace Combat 8, and Final Fantasy Resonance, all releasing in October. Additionally, it follows major September launches like Marvel’s Wolverine and Silent Hill: Townfall, with its initial release date pushed from September 24.
A Deluxe Edition of the game will be available for $60 / €60, which includes the base game, a “major story DLC” expected in 2027, and a pack of weapon skins. The developers also promised free updates in the weeks and months following the launch.
In an interview with The Game Business, Blake Rochkind, head of publisher Lyrical Games, discussed the challenging pricing decision. He expressed concern that pricing could send the wrong message, stating, “My biggest concern was that it would send the wrong message about the game.” He emphasized the importance of communicating the rationale behind the pricing to the consumer.
Rochkind also highlighted Valor Mortis’s unique position as one of the few new intellectual properties launching in a crowded fall season, complicating the publisher’s efforts to attract buyers. “The cards we’ve been dealt is [that] we are one of the only new IPs launching this fall,” he explained. “We are pretty confident in Valor Mortis. It is a great game. I’m very, very excited for people to play it. But ultimately, I think the worst thing we could do is not push our chips in and say, ‘We want this to be a game that you can pick up alongside these other great games.’
Valor Mortis is being developed for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, and will be available for day-one access on Game Pass for PC and Xbox.
