Yuji Horii Unveils New Game Created Using Generative AI in Just 30 Minutes
- Yuji Horii, co-creator of Dragon Quest, developed a new game in approximately 30 minutes using generative AI.
- In a social media post, Horii reflected on his solo creation of the 1983 game, The Portopia Serial Murder Case.
- Horii has previously incorporated AI in games, such as Dragon Quest 10’s NPC chatbot, “Chatty Slimey”.
Yuji Horii, renowned for co-creating the Dragon Quest series, recently announced the release of a new game he generated in about half an hour, attributing its creation to the capabilities of generative AI. In a post on X over the weekend, Horii reminisced about the solitary effort that went into creating his landmark 1983 game, The Portopia Serial Murder Case. He remarked, “I came up with the story myself, drew the pictures myself, did the programming myself, and created the game all by myself.”
He expressed astonishment at how he can now use AI tools to produce games without traditional skills such as programming or illustration. “Even if I can’t draw pictures or program, I can just give instructions to the AI and create a decent game all by myself. It’s truly astonishing,” he noted. He invited followers to try out the newly created game, humorously cautioning them not to press the “boost” button.

Earlier this year, Horii began integrating AI into his projects when Dragon Quest 10 collaborated with Google’s Gemini AI to create an NPC chatbot named “Chatty Slimey.” This character interacts with players, enhancing the gaming experience in the massively multiplayer online RPG. In a discussion with Famitsu, Horii defended the incorporation of AI, stating, “Because nowadays AI is really smart, it’s fun… It’s evolving, and lately there are a lot of things you can do with it. Slimey is a conversational partner, so I think it lowers the barrier of entry to interacting with AI.”
Looking ahead, as reported by Video Games Chronicle, Horii is contemplating the introduction of AI-powered chatbots in future games, while he continues to work on Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams and a long-awaited sequel to The Portopia Serial Murder Case.
The growing use of generative AI in game development has sparked considerable debate, with concerns arising among players, developers, and video game actors regarding job security. Recent highlights include the unveiling of a new AI game-making tool by Google and Unity, which has been met with mixed reactions.
