Will de Renzy-Martin Emphasizes Human Element Over AI in Performance
- Will de Renzy-Martin, lead actor in The Blood of Dawnwalker, discusses the importance of human qualities in acting.
- The project faced controversy over prior AI usage for planning before hiring actors.
- De Renzy-Martin’s performance in the game is highly praised, contributing to the narrative’s depth.
Will de Renzy-Martin, who portrays the lead character Coen in the English version of The Blood of Dawnwalker, highlighted the irreplaceable qualities that human actors bring to performances compared to AI-generated voice lines. In a recent TikTok teaser for the upcoming My Perfect Console Podcast, he conveyed that the spoken lines comprise only a fraction of an actor’s contribution, stating, “I think the least interesting thing about what I do is the way my voice sounds. That is really all that generative AI is able to replicate.”
De Renzy-Martin elaborated that AI fails to capture his personality and the unique choices he makes while performing, essential elements that directors and producers value. He recalled previously mentioning that while actors may seem inexpensive, utilizing AI voice generation requires skilled individuals to elicit the desired performances, which could ultimately be costlier than hiring actors.
The development of The Blood of Dawnwalker sparked controversy when Rebel Wolves disclosed their use of text-to-speech AI for planning cinematics before employing actors for final performances. Game director Konrad Tomazkiewicz acknowledged the potential applications of AI in game development, particularly for tasks like bug fixing, but confirmed that no AI was used to create content within The Blood of Dawnwalker.
In contrast, other game companies, notably Embark Studios, have utilized AI to generate voice lines in their projects, such as The Finals and Arc Raiders. Additionally, companies like Elevenlabs have developed business models around licensing voices of famous actors. Notably, actor Matthew McConaughey is an investor in Elevenlabs and will feature in the video game Exodus, although his lines in the game have not been AI-generated.
In 2023, de Renzy-Martin has lent his voice to several video games, including The Sinking City 2, 007 First Light, and Star Wars: Galactic Racer. However, his role as Coen stands out, praised for its depth and the engaging quality of his voice, which enhances the player experience.
In a review for Eurogamer, The Blood of Dawnwalker received four stars, characterized as a dark fantasy adventure with bold and innovative concepts, achieving significant success.
