16 Mummies and a Mysterious Dog Uncover Secrets of an Ancient Egyptian Tomb—What Will They Reveal?

Researchers Uncover Evolution of Burial Practices in Theban Necropolis Tomb

A recent study published in Frontiers in Environmental Archaeology has provided new insights into the burial practices of ancient Egypt, focusing on chamber three within tomb TT 209 in the Theban Necropolis, located across the Nile from Luxor. This tomb, constructed during Egypt’s Twenty-fifth Dynasty (754-656 BCE), was used until the Ptolemaic period (305-30 BCE) and contains over 400 tombs.

The research team from the University of La Laguna in Spain, led by Dr. Jared Carballo-Pérez, discovered 16 mummified human individuals, a mummified dog, and a disturbed deposit with at least four additional sets of remains. “The detailed study of the bodies indicates neither chaotic accumulation nor a loss of the original ritual over time,” stated Carballo-Pérez. Instead, their findings suggest a deliberate and logical approach to space, wherein each new burial took into account earlier interments, creating a kind of “funerary memory” within the chamber.

Evolution of Burial Practices

The researchers excavated the burial chamber, chronicling the arrangement of remains and associated artifacts. They identified nine funerary deposits, which included both individual and multiple burials. Initially, the bodies were placed in coffins and spaced apart, indicating their high social status as they were interred with funerary nets, amulets, and costly items found in Phoenician amphorae.

As time progressed, particularly towards the end of the Twenty-fifth Dynasty and into the Persian period (circa 680-404 BCE), burial practices transformed. New bodies were interred in any available space, leading to a denser occupancy. The positioning of some remains also evolved, with earlier burials showing extended arms while later individuals often had arms folded inward. Notably, by the Persian period, bodies began to be placed vertically, with two-thirds of the burials occurring in this manner.

Significant Discoveries

A particularly striking arrangement was found in the southeastern section of the chamber, featuring four mummies and a mummified dog stacked atop each other from the Ptolemaic period. “The bodies buried in vertical superposition did not have coffins but were carefully mummified,” remarked senior author Dr. Miguel Ángel Molinero Polo. This configuration was complemented by upright jars, indicating a specific ritual practice that had not been observed in earlier phases of the tomb’s use.

Carballo-Pérez noted the emotional connection this setup implied, citing the mummified dog placed above a man and a woman, suggesting a close bond or potentially indicating a change in ritual, with the animal serving as a psychopomp in the afterlife journey.

Implications for Archaeological Understanding

Further examination revealed changes in burial positions, such as some individuals being interred with their arms crossed over the chest in the Osirian position. These evolving patterns illustrate that the tomb’s increasing density did not equate to disorganization; rather, it reflects a return to active use where each new deposition respected the existing burials.

The chamber’s prolonged use over centuries involved multiple disruptive events, including flooding and fires, complicating the archaeological record. Despite these challenges, the team believes their findings enable a reevaluation of other crowded burial spaces previously deemed chaotic. “Deposits that were previously considered ‘disordered’ can be reinterpreted,” Carballo-Pérez concluded, enhancing the understanding of social behaviors surrounding funerary practices in ancient Egypt.
