Victoria University Research Highlights Exercise’s Role in Protecting Aging Brains
New research from Victoria University (VU) underscores the potential of regular exercise to mitigate age-related brain decline, including conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. James Broatch from VU led the analysis, focusing on how physical activity influences the glymphatic system, a key pathway for brain waste clearance that is particularly active during sleep.
Understanding Exercise and Brain Health
The well-established benefits of exercise for healthy aging have prompted researchers to delve deeper into the specific mechanisms by which physical activity protects brain health. This exploration is crucial, as over 10 million individuals globally are diagnosed with dementia annually, with no known cure available.
Recently published in the journal Trends in Neurosciences, Dr. Broatch’s peer-reviewed paper, titled “Exercise as a regulator of glymphatic function,” reviews existing studies on the glymphatic system in both animals and humans. The findings suggest that exercise can enhance several physiological processes that help regulate this waste clearance system.
Physiological Benefits Linked to Exercise
Notable benefits associated with exercise include reductions in blood pressure and vascular stiffness, improved activation of neurons, decreased brain inflammation, lowered resting norepinephrine levels, and enhanced sleep quality. Moreover, exercise appears to increase the quality of deep sleep and boost slow wave activity linked to brain waste clearance.
Dr. Broatch emphasized that the connection between exercise and brain protection could offer significant insights as researchers seek evidence-based physical activities that may slow brain deterioration as people age. “If we don’t have opportunities for the brain to essentially clean out the junk from the day, we know that build-up is damaging, especially as we age,” he stated. He highlighted the irony that while good quality sleep is crucial for this function, it often becomes more elusive with age.
Future Research Directions
Despite these promising findings, many questions remain regarding the optimal type and amount of exercise necessary for brain health, especially for individuals experiencing cognitive decline or diagnosed with brain diseases. Dr. Broatch noted that ongoing research aims to clarify these aspects.
Currently, the findings serve as a compelling reminder of the importance of integrating regular movement into daily routines. “If nothing else, this is yet another reminder that regular movement—especially the type that lifts your heart rate—is so important for every part of your health,” Dr. Broatch concluded. He advocates that cultivating good exercise habits early can lead to better health outcomes as people age.
