OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Plug-in for Apple Messages

OpenAI has officially introduced a plug-in for Apple Messages that integrates with ChatGPT, enabling users to connect their Messages inbox directly to the AI chatbot. This new feature is designed to assist users in managing their digital conversations more efficiently.

According to OpenAI, the plug-in offers various capabilities, allowing users to sort, analyze, and edit their messages through ChatGPT. Notably, it is also compatible with Codex and ChatGPT Work, providing a professional use case beyond personal messaging.

A promotional video for the plug-in features a user querying ChatGPT for follow-up message suggestions based on their prior day’s conversations. Users can also utilize the plug-in to delete messages, draft responses, send messages autonomously, or retrieve information from their message history.

Despite its useful capabilities, this plug-in raises privacy concerns. OpenAI assured Bloomberg that it operates locally on users’ devices and “doesn’t create an index of all someone’s messages.” However, the details surrounding this assurance remain unclear. TechCrunch has contacted OpenAI for further clarification.

As a precaution, OpenAI advises users to monitor ChatGPT’s actions when sending messages and discourages enabling persistent approval, warning that this setting “removes your final chance to review a message before ChatGPT sends it as you.”
