Patterson-White’s 76 Not Out Keeps Nottinghamshire Competitive Against Surrey

Nottinghamshire’s Ben Patterson-White delivered a pivotal performance with an unbeaten 76 runs, helping his team recover from a precarious position against Surrey in their Rothesay County Championship clash. At the close of play, Surrey found themselves at 13 for 1 in response to Nottinghamshire’s first innings total of 184.

Patterson-White entered the match at No. 8, contributing significantly as his side was struggling at 70 for 6. His counter-attacking innings featured 13 boundaries from 112 balls, bringing vital support from Kyle Verreynne and Brett Hutton, who made 22 and 19 runs, respectively. The last two wickets for Nottinghamshire added 80 runs, with the tail-ender Dillon Pennington also contributing 9 runs before being dismissed.

Surrey secured an early advantage in the match, dismissing five of Nottinghamshire’s top-order batsmen for just 41 runs. After winning the toss, Surrey opted to bowl first on a green pitch, and their bowlers, particularly Tom Lawes, who took 5 wickets for 45 runs, exploited the conditions effectively. Matt Fisher and Dan Worrall also played key roles with two wickets each, as Nottinghamshire struggled against the pace attack.

The morning session faced interruptions, with heavy rain cutting play short after just 86 minutes. After lunch, with the rain causing further delays, Nottinghamshire fought to stabilize their innings but continued to lose wickets. Patterson-White’s partnership with Verreynne, which yielded 28 runs, briefly lifted the innings before Verreynne was dismissed. As Nottinghamshire slipped to 104 for 8, Hutton partnered with Patterson-White for a strong partnership of 56 runs, which provided some resilience to the Nottinghamshire batting line-up.

Theirs was not to be a straightforward fight as both Hutton and the lower order eventually succumbed to Surrey’s relentless bowling attack, with Olly Stone’s wicket of Dom Sibley contributing to Nottinghamshire’s messy collapse. Notably, Ryan Patel left the field after suffering a finger injury while attempting a catch, and he has been replaced in the Surrey side by Josh Blake.
