Fairphone Launches Gen 6+ Smartphone in the U.S., Priced from $649
Fairphone, the Dutch company recognized for its commitment to sustainability and repairable technology, announced on Tuesday that its latest smartphone, the Fairphone Gen 6+, is now available in the United States starting at $649. This marks the first instance where U.S. consumers can purchase Fairphone devices directly, without modifications, after the company previously partnered with e/OS to offer a “de-Googled” version of earlier models.
The Fairphone 6+ is designed to support T-Mobile and AT&T’s networks from the outset. As a midrange Android device, it aims to provide a durable, repairable option amid rising consumer electronics prices due to ongoing component shortages.
“We’re delivering a device built from the ground up to be opened, repaired, and kept alive for many years,” stated Fairphone CEO Raymond van Eck.
Under the hood, the Fairphone 6+ is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 processor and features 12GB of RAM. It boasts a 4,415 mAh battery with 30W fast-charging capabilities, complemented by a 6.31-inch LTPO OLED display offering an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz.
In terms of photography, the device is equipped with a 50-megapixel main camera featuring a Sony sensor and an aperture of f/1.88, along with a secondary 13-megapixel ultrawide camera at f/2.2. The front-facing selfie camera is 32 megapixels with an f/2.0 aperture. While the camera specifications suggest capable daylight performance, lower-light scenarios may result in diminished quality.
The standout feature of the Fairphone 6+ is its 12 replaceable components, including key parts such as the battery, cameras, USB-C port, and the display, all of which can be swapped out with a single screwdriver. The company offers a five-year warranty and software support extending until 2033.
Additionally, Fairphone emphasizes a sustainable manufacturing process, claiming a carbon footprint reduction of 30 kg of CO2e for each unit produced. The Fairphone 6+ is available in three color options: Forest Green, Horizon Black, and Cobalt Blue. Accessories like a finger loop, lanyard, and card holder are also on sale, allowing for further customization through the removable back cover.
